About Mission Hills:

Mission Hills is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, USA. As of the 2000 census, the city had a population of 3,593. Mission Hills has the highest median household income of any city in Kansas with a population over 1,000, as well as one of the highest median incomes for any city in the United States. The city is a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri, which is adjacent to the east, across the the aptly named State Line Road. Other adjacent cities include Prairie Village, Fairway, and Mission Woods, Kansas. Mission Hills was originally developed by noted Kansas City developer J. C. Nichols beginning in the 1920s.

The northern half of Mission Hills -- north of 63rd Street -- is informally called "old Mission Hills" and is dominated by opulent houses on large lots. There are two private country clubs in this section, the Mission Hills Country Club and the more soigne Kansas City Country Club. The southern half, consisting of developments called Indian Hills and Sagamore Hills, contains affluent upper-middle-class residences and the private Indian Hills Country Club.

There is one church in Mission Hills; there are no commercial properties in the city. A recently removed coin-operated telephone at the church was for many years considered the city's only commercial enterprise.

Mission Hills is in the Shawnee Mission public school district. Many residents send their children to secular private schools in Kansas City, Missouri -- the Pembroke Hill School and the Barstow School.

Famous residents, past and present, include popular writers Evan S. Connell (who wrote Mr. Bridge and Mrs. Bridge) and James Ellroy; billionaire greeting-card mogul Donald J. Hall, Sr.; professional golfer Tom Watson; former baseball player George Brett; The Baffler founder Thomas Frank; Marguerite Munger Peet, a prolific painter and pastelist and wife of Herbert Orvis Peet, whose family owned the largest soap company west of the Mississippi River, Peet Brothers' Company; and several members of the Sutherland family, owners of Sutherland Lumber.

Mission Hills Geography:

Mission Hills is located at 39°0'49" North, 94°36'54" West (39.013705, -94.615083).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 km2 (2.0 mi2). 5.2 km2 (2.0 mi2) of it is land and none of it is covered by water. However, Brush Creek runs through the northern section of the city.

Mission Hills Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,593 people, 1,284 households, and 1,104 families residing in the city. The population density is 686.8/km2 (1,782.5/mi2). There are 1,318 housing units at an average density of 251.9/km2 (653.9/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 98.22% White, 0.08% African American, 0.03% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.64% from two or more races. 1.09% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,284 households out of which 38.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 81.2% are married couples living together, 3.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 14.0% are non-families. 12.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.06.

In the city the population is spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 3.1% from 18 to 24, 18.1% from 25 to 44, 32.5% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $188,821, and the median income for a family is $200,000. Males have a median income of $100,000 versus $62,440 for females. The per capita income for the city is $95,405. 1.2% of the population and 1.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.8% of those under the age of 18 and 1.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
